President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942. What followed the issuance of the order was the abrupt termination of all the Nikkei communities on the West Coast and Western Arizona. The force of the order detained 112, 000 individuals, 70,000 of whom were American citizens by virtue of their place of birth. All were ultimately exiled from their West Coast homes from 1942 until 1945 and beyond.

For information concerning placers outside the reservation the writer is indebted to Mr. E. L. Dufourcq, who conducted the testing of placer .ground near Quartzsite. Mr. W. W. McCoy, of San Bernardino, kindly furnished the early history of the La Paz district, and Mr. Edward Beggs, of Quartzsite, gave much useful information regarding the La Paz placers. In 1909 Howland Bancroft x made a geologic reconnaissance of northern Yuma County .and much of the country around Quartzsite and farther west to the reservation line. In his report he mentions the La Paz district and briefly describes placers in the Plomosa Mountains and prospects on gold-bearing quartz veins in the vicinity of Quartzsite.
The Red Ghost
The Red Ghost terrorized Arizona during the 1880’s. The first reported appearance is in 1883, when it trampled a woman to death and left traces of red hair stuck to nearby tall grass at the scene. Later, a cowboy tried to rope the beast, but it turned and charged him, killing the man and his mount. A group of miners pursued it along the Verde River. It evaded capture, but shook something loose off of its back, a rotted human skull with dried skin and patches of hair stuck to it.
